Jim
Elder – Owner/Driver
Jim
Elder grew up on the island of St. Thomas where at the age of 13,
his love of racing began with the purchase of his first motorcycle.
On a dirt road the seed was planted. The thrill of the fast track
was not one to be easily forgotten. No surprise since Jim’s
dad, Pete Elder, had been a race car driver in the late 40’s
and early 50’s running sprint cars and midgets in Ohio, Pennsylvania,
Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois. Mr. Elder is the designer and builder
of the first Dolphin Formula 500 race car.
As the years went by,
Jim found himself relocated to Florida. He settled in West Palm
Beach and in the winter of 1989 found his way to the SCCA Nationals
at Moroso Motorsports Park. By the beginning of summer that same
year, Jim was completing his drivers school and getting ready for
his first regional competition at the South Florida Fairgrounds
in West Palm Beach. Jim’s devotion to the sport of racing
was etched in stone.
Since then, Jim has built
an impressive resume of championship wins and numerous distinctions,
including:
- SCCA Florida Regional
Champion for five consecutive years (1991-1995)
- South Atlantic Road
Racing Championship (1991)
- Finished 2nd in the
1994 SCCA National Runoffs and set a track record
- Finished 4th in the
1992 SCCA National Runoffs after starting in the 26th position
- Hank Jewitt Memorial
Trophy for Excellence, Perseverance, and Devotion (1991)
- National Driver of
the Year (1994)
- SCCA Southeast Division
National Champion in 1995, 1999, and 2000
Jim has since teamed
up with Bob Berman to win the 2001, 2003, and 2005 Southeast Division
Championship for Dolphin Motorsports.
Jim now devotes most
of his time to the preparation and support of the Dolphin Motorsports
racing team, which has dominated the Formula 500 class for 11 years
in the SCCA Southeast Division. His time is also spent promoting
racing to the young driver who is looking for a step up into the
exciting world of SCCA racing. Dolphin Motorsports is currently
gearing up to bring its winning reputation to the SCCA Formula class
– a brand new spec formula class that, due to its low cost
and high performance, promises to be very successful.
